Have Beach Fun and Prevent Beach Damage with Hair Sun Protection

by vic on July 4, 2009

Hair sun protection is vitally important and nearly always overlooked. If you are like most, you look forward to summer all year. However, your hair probably does not. You may love the warm glow that your hair picks up in the summer, but even “natural” lightening from the sun is hard on your hair. Hair that begins with beautiful sunny highlights can end the summer as straw if you do not protect it.

Here are some good suggestions for effective hair sun protection:

* Be sure to moisturize - Pool chemicals and salt from the ocean are incredibly destructive when it comes to your hair. The best method of hair sun protection is constant moisturizing. Like your skin, your hair needs moisture to resist environmental damage. Use a leave-in conditioner or spray your hair with a weak combo of your regular conditioner and water each time you exit the pool or ocean.

* Look for Octyl Methyoxycinnamate - Usually, you will want to avoid complicated chemicals when it comes to your hair. However, octyl methoxycinnate is one of the best ways to give serious SPF power to a hair product. You can also keep an eye out for products with vitamins A, E and C to fight off free radicals. This is what highly charged molecules that damage hair and skin are called.

* Go Under Cover - Placing physical protection between the sun and your hair is probably the most fool-proof method of hair sun protection. Fix a scarf over your head for a classically glamorous and fully protected look. This is vital when the sun is strongest, between 10 AM and 3PM.

* “Do” Your Hair Right - A bun or pony tail protects the majority of your hair during unexpected sun exposure. Smooth it back with a quick dollop of sunscreen for a quick and convenient look.

Keep from damaging your locks in the summer by protecting your hair from the sun. Good hair sun protection will help you get your tresses through the summer fun and into fall.
